Yahoo’s Smart Move to Snag Zimbra

In the never ceasing application acquisition war, Yahoo reports on Yodel that they have made the slick move to acquire Zimbra. Think Web based Microsoft Outlook for Mac and Linux on steroids and you begin to get the idea behind this slick, Ajaxy application. Zimbra serves well for collaborative environments, is cross-platform compatible, and reportedly easy to administrate. Best of all for Linux and Mac users, there’s an open source edition.

I’ve been using Zimbra open source edition for more than a year on my own server at http://www.maildotcom.com to provide email for myself and a couple of family members, and the only thing I can say about it is it’s just wonderful.

The open source edition has a couple of limitations, but they are hardly noticeable for regular home users.

Art, That’s great feedback. Everything I’ve read or heard is great stuff. Good to hear. Our sys admin was enchanted by it but we are connected at the navel to M$, so I don’t see us using it on an enterprise level.
