A Virtual Desktop for Windows that Works

After trying-out a number of virtual desktops for Windows and being disappointed by their instability, I finally landed on a version that seems to be much more stable than other free versions. Virtual Dimension, recommended by my good friend Mike Scott over at Port16.com met my expectations. For all of you Linux users, go ahead and smirk, yeah you’ve had this function for years. Virtual desktops allow you to have multiple desktops running on the same machine. It’s a nifty way to break-up your computing functions into different screens based on purpose without using multiple monitors.

I’m glad it works for you Phil! I know I couldn’t live without it.

Mike, yes I agree with you. I may go back to a second or larger monitor if I can get an LCD, but the virtual desktop is here to stay.

Hmm, I’ve never been a virtual desktop guy but I guess I have to give it a shot. How are you using it - how do you organize them, and what does it do for your productivity?

Scott, I’ve broken my desktop up into several, so something link Outlook/IM/Pownce on one desktop I’ve named communication. I have one for web browser, one for apps like Flash and other code and a fourth for data management. The most helpful aspect for me is not rearranging the desktop all the time and segmenting it out by function. It makes for a cleaner experience and less shuffling of windows throughout my day.
