After having experimented with Jing for recording video of the desktop, I’ve come back to CamStudio. While Jing has some nice features including capturing still images I find CamStudio to capture higher resolution video and is a little more flexible. Jing has its strengths as well which I outline in a previous review on thoughtsparks.net. CamStudio’s interface is not as slick, but for serious video capture of desktop and voice recordings, it is seems to produce a higher quality with the option to save as .avi or .swf formats. Being opensource the price is certainly right.

Thanks for sharing this !
Seem like good tools (jing as well as camstudio) but is it correct that they only run on Mac and Windows ?
Stephane
Stephane,
Jing runs on both Mac and Windows. CamStudio studio runs on PC. I don’t find any info on Mac. I don’t believe either work in Linux.
Camstudio is useless in VISTA.. very buggy…
I know its opensource
I use My Screen Recorder, far superior than Camstudio and works great in Vista
Navin,
That’s good info. I’ve not yet moved to Vista so I’m a bit in the dark for that OS just yet. Thanks.
Thanks. I was looking for a review on Camtasia. Looking forward to us it.
